Day 12 roundup: Swiss denies China's historic skiing gold

TURIN, Feb. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- China ended its winter Olympic drought in 2002 with two short track speedskating titles from YangYang, but has never won a skiing gold. So the nation had expected four women's aerialists to deliver one.

They didn't.

Swiss freestyler Evelyne Leu used her spectacular second jump to overtake the Chinese, winning the gold medal with a total of 202.55 points on Wednesday night.

Lew was 4.16 points over silver medalist Li Nina, China's reigning world champion and World Cup leader, who scored 96.58 forher second jump.

Australian Alisa Camplin executed two consistent jumps to grab the bronze with 191.39 points.

Chinese Guo Xinxin, who led after the first jump, failed to land her second jump and fell to sixth.

"It's like a big boat overturned in a small river," Guo said ofher failed landing.

Guo's teammate Xu Nanan, silver medalist in 1998 and third after Guo and Li after the first jump, ended up in fourth place. Another Chinese Wang Jiao was 11th.

China's woes spilled over short track as its women's team was disqualified for impeding at the 3,000m relay final, which was wonby South Korea.

South Korea clocked four minutes, 17 seconds for its fourth short track title in the Turin Games and Canada picked the silver in 4:17.336.

Italy won a surprise bronze following China's disqualification.

Switzerland's second gold of the day came from Philipp Schoch, who became the first snowboarder to retain an Olympic title, beating older brother and World Cup leader Simon in the final of the men's parallel giant slalom.

Austria's Siegfried Grabner won the bronze playoff after France's Mathieu Bozzetto tumbled on the first run.

Sweden and Canada struck a golden double too.

Bjoern Lind claimed Sweden's third cross-country skiing title and his second here following his success in the team sprint, whenhe won the men's individual sprint in two minutes, 26.5 seconds.

Frenchman Roddy Darragon nabbed the silver in the four-man final, narrowly beating Sweden's Thobias Fredriksson into bronze.

Anja Paerson ended her long wait for a gold, triumphing in the women's slalom.

The Swede, who won a silver and bronze in the 2002 Games and has already won two bronzes here, crossed the finish ahead of Austrian pair Nicole Hosp and Marlies Schild.

The victory was Sweden's first in Olympic Alpine events since Pernilla Wiberg took the women's combined title in 1994.

Canadian Chandra Crawford created a surprise victory in the in the women's 1.1km sprint, nailing her country's first cross country gold in Turin.

The 22-year-old edged more favored Claudia Kuenzel of Germany into second, while Russia's Alena Sidko took the bronze.

Canada's second gold for the day was snatched by Cindy Klassen,who won the women's 1,500m speedskating to become the Turin Games'first quadruple medalist.

The reigning world champion and world record holder stormed home first in one minute, 55.27 seconds to defeat teammate Kristina Groves by 1.47 seconds.

Dutch teenager Ireen Wust took the bronze in 1:56.90, elbowing defending champion Anni Friesinger of Germany off the podium by 0.41. Enditem (By Sportswriter Cao Jianjie )
