SHANGHAI, June 5 -- Shanghai has donated two million yuan (US$262,000) to relief efforts in Yunnan Province, which was struck by a strong earthquake and a series of aftershocks over the weekend. Shanghai was the country's first major municipal financial donor, said Liu Minghua, director of the economic cooperation division of Yunnan's office in Shanghai. Liu said the province will soon release an account number that will allow the public to make donations to those whose homes were damaged by the quake. More than 179,000 people have been evacuated following the 6.4-magnitude earthquake, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. At least three people, including a four-year-old boy, were killed and 313 were injured by the tremor, which hit tea-producing Pu'er City and its surrounding area early Sunday morning when most people were in bed. Among those resettled, 65,000 were evacuated from Ning'er County, which suffered some of the worst damage. Most of the evacuees are now living in tents or public places as their mud-and-brick houses were damaged in the powerful quake, Xinhua news agency reported. More than 530,000 Yunnan residents were affected by the disaster, according to emergency authorities. More than 90,000 houses collapsed and 270,000 others were damaged, inflicting 2.5 billion yuan in damages, they said. The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Finance have earmarked a living allowance of 27 million yuan for those hit by the quake. And some 15,000 tents have been transported to the disaster area, according to Xinhua reports.
