SHANGHAI, Oct. 8 -- MORE than 4.6 million tourists visited Shanghai during the National Day holiday, up about 15 percent since the same period last year. More than 33,000 tourists were from abroad, a rise of about seven percent, tourism authorities said yesterday. The city gained tourism revenue of more than 3.3 billion yuan (US$425 million), up 21 percent, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission. Yuyuan Garden was the most popular tourist attraction, with nearly two million visitors who tasted typical Shanghai delicacies in the garden. More local people chose to go to the countryside for a break. "Country tourism" venues received more than 742,230 tourists, a rise of about 27 percent since last National Day holiday. More than one million tourists visited Shanghai on more than 1,220 railway trains, up about 11 percent on the last National Day holiday. More than 555,000 tourists came to the city by long-distance bus, a rise of six percent since last year, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission. Complaints CELL phones, color televisions and air-conditioners were the focus of consumer complaints during the National Day holiday, authorities said. The city's complaint hotline 12315 received 930 complaints or reports of illegal businesses, a rise of 30 percent on the same period last year, according to the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau. After-sales service of household electric appliances was the main complaint, as consumers found they couldn't get prompt repairs, exchanges or refunds during the holiday. Complaints about the service for color televisions and air-conditioners rose by 135 percent and 155 percent respectively since last October's holiday. Quality check FIVE illegal food-processing centers, three food manufacturers without health certificates and three food sales companies without a business license were reported during the holiday. Illegally produced food worth more than 45,250 yuan (US$5,830) was confiscated over the holiday, said the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. Metro ABOUT 16.52 million people travelled Shanghai's Metro lines during the seven days from September 30, said officials with Shanghai Metro Operation Co yesterday. That was a 24 percent rise over last year's holiday, boosted by the number of visitors for the Special Olympics and Formula 1 race, said officials. Metro Line 5 served 2.87 million riders on September 30, breaking the city's daily service record for a single subway line. About 870,000 extra tickets were dispatched to busy stations during the week to cater to crowds of travelers. The Metro company had prepared 1.2 million extra tickets before the holiday to get ready for possible ticket shortages. Port ABOUT 11,000 tourists travelled in and out of the two local cruise-ship passenger ports during the holiday. Shanghai Port immigration police said 11 international cruise ships visited the city during the holiday, with triple the number of passengers since the same holiday last year. Garbage collection A TOTAL of 90,283 tons of garbage was cleared from the city during the National Day holiday, Shanghai Public Sanitation Bureau said yesterday, about the same amount as in previous years. That put the city's garbage volume at 12,897 tons a day during the holiday.
