Although there are still a few days to go before the Chinese traditional Lantern Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year - or February 21st - a lantern exhibition has opened in Shaanxi Province in northwest China and is already heating up the festive atmosphere.

The lantern exhibition opened on Friday at the Cultural Square of Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes descended on the square, competing with each other with their splendid illuminations and intricate craftsmanship.

But capturing the bulk of the attention at the exhibition is the part dedicated to the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Floats are divided into thirty-six groups, with each displaying the twin themes of Welcoming the Olympics and Ushering in the Auspicious Year. Special effects further augment the visual feast.

The lantern exhibition runs until March the 10th in Xi'an. It will then tour around the country, including an August stopover in Beijing to coincide with the Olympics.
