China's first test tube baby turns 20 this year, and recently a group of test tube babies took a trip back to their place of birth to learn more about how they came into the world.
They look no different than others But they were born in a unique way.
A doctor said, "The eggs are selected here, and the embryo is formed after the sperm joins with the egg."
This lab in a Beijing hospital is where test tube babies were born. Now as they are older, they are curious to learn more about this special technology.
China's 1st test tube baby Zheng Mengzhu said, "It was magic. I'm feeling so lucky."
Zheng Mengzhu was China's first test tube baby. She is now in good health, and will have her 20th birthday soon. Her birth was a gift for her mother, and all the doctors on the research team.
More than 10,000 test tube babies have been born since Zheng, and the technology has developed in the past two decades. This provides hope for the five to eight percent of couples in China who cannot conceive, and may bring good news to families who have hereditary disease.
A doctor said, "We can select an embryo carrying no hereditary genes, and this could stop the diseases in the family."
Experts hope that with the development of test tube technology, more parents will have the chance to have a healthy baby, and share the happiness of Zheng's family.
