Pressure is mounting on New York Governor Eliot Spitzer to resign because of his involvement in a prostitution scandal. Republicans there are threatening impeachment proceedings if Spitzer doesn't step down in 48 hours.
New York Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco is pressing the governor to resign and says he has talked with the deputy governor about the power transfer issue if Spitzer steps down.
Tedisco will need support from the Democratic majority in the Assembly to go forward with impeachment proceedings.
If passed there, at least a two-thirds approval of the combined vote of the Senate and the nine-member Court of Appeals is required.
New Yorkers say they are "shocked" by the allegations.
Michael Evans, Resident of New York, said, "He's very much into crime and punishment and doing the right thing and then he comes along and does something so obviously foolish that, I was very surprised."
Lori Bennett, Resident, New York, said, "I think it's unfortunate. I feel really bad for his wife, his family and I think he should resign. I think he should step down."
The 48-year-old Democrat was elected twice as state attorney general and is known for his high-profile investigations into Wall Street.
Spitzer apologized on Monday for what he described as a "private matter" but said nothing about resigning.
