Easter eggs have a long tradition in Germany. The tradition of decorating eggs is especially rooted in Saxony. An exhibition of around a thousand decorated Easter eggs went on show at the Saxon Folk Art Museum in Dresden.

The decorated Easter egg exhibition is not only vast, in terms of numbers, it's also a showcase for local and international artists.

A variety of different techniques are shown in the exhibits.

The egg is a traditional symbol of fertility in many cultures. Christians regard eggs as symbolic of new life and rebirth.

Baerbel Lange, belongs to a group of artists, that applies the so-called Sorbian approach to egg decorating. She says it's fun..

Baerbel Lange, Sorbian egg decorator, said, "One gets in the mood for Easter by working with the Easter eggs and it gives Easter a wonderful meaning. You do it with other people and talk about it from the end of January."

Eggs decorated with traditional Sorbian methods are usually hard boiled.

Sorbian artists use various techniques, such as engraving the eggs with quills.
