Not long ago, Salvatore Licitra was an aspiring graphic artist in Italy. His only connection to Luciano Pavarotti and the world of opera was his Italian heritage. Today, he stands as an heir to one of music's most venerable thrones - that of the Italian operatic tenor. Licitra showed off his impressive voice in his Chinese debut at the Shanghai Grand Theater on Friday night.
The concert opened with One Day in Azure Space from the opera Andrea Chenier. Licitra's impressive voice was proof that the 39-year-old is in his artistic prime. Critics have already touted him as one of the greatest tenors of today, with some calling him the next Pavarotti. He treated Shanghai audiences to many arias from Puccini's - indicating his special gift as an operatic tenor.
Licitra became overnight success in 2002. That was when he stepped in to cover for Pavarotti, who was ill. Licitra has stayed true to himself despite the flowers and applause. For the Shanghai concerts, he has been humble during rehearsals with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. His diligence and pleasant demeanor has earned him more accolades.
