A moderate earthquake jolted downtown Los Angeles. It happened just before noon. Office workers poured into the streets as tall buildings swayed.
The shallow quake measured 5.4 in magnitude and was centered about 30 miles east of Los Angeles near Chino Hills. The quake shook an area as far south as San Diego and as east as Las Vegas.
Scientist Kate Hutton of the California Institute of Technology said a quake of that magnitude usually doesn't cause major damage.
