A Chinese man stabbed an American tourist to death and injured another near a popular tourist spot in Beijing on the first full day of Olympic competition Saturday.
The visitors were relatives of a coach with the U.S. volleyball squad.
Police say the attacker then jumped to his death from the second storey of the Drum Tower, a monument used to tell time centuries ago.
A Chinese tour guide was also injured in the attack.
(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNIDENTIFIED LOCAL RESIDENT SAYING:
"Two Americans were stabbed by a Chinese. The Chinese man jumped off the tower. I heard it from a neighbour here."
The attack has shocked the country where violent crime against foreigners is rare.
Coming just hours after a spectacular opening ceremony, the attack has cast a shadow over an otherwise successful opening for the Olympic Games.
