Uganda beats Tanzania to qualify for 2014 CHAN tourney

KAMPALA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Cranes on Saturday qualified for the 2014 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after a 3-1 victory over Tanzania in the second leg qualifier played here at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The Cranes who appeared in the 2011 CHAN competition in Khartoum, Sudan qualified on a 4-1 goal aggregate after their 1-0 away win in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on July 13.

Frank Kalanda gave the hosts a sixth minute lead before Amri Kiemba equalized 10 minutes later from a well-taken Mrisho Ngasa cross. Brian Majwega made it 2-1 for the Cranes after 48 minutes from the spot after defender David Luhende handles in the box.

In the 62nd minute Kalanda got himself a brace when he beautifully placed in the net. The Taifa Stars did not recover after the third goal.

"We have worked so hard to make it to the 2014 CHAN event and I want to thank the team for a job well done. This will open doors for professional football for many of these players when they play in the competition next year," said Cranes skipper, Hassan Mawanda Wasswa.

Tanzania's coach Kim Poulsen said his boys played well in the first half, but failed in the second half.

Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic, Uganda's coach said he was happy his team had listened to instructions and won the game.

"Playing at the 2014 CHAN is a good step for the local based players because it will open doors," added the former Rwanda national coach who signed for Uganda on May 21 this year. ' Line-ups:
