NEW DELHI, March 5(Xinhuanet)-- Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday promised economic growth above seven percent in the next few years.
"I assure you that this government will do everything possible to keep the growth above seven percent, aiming at eight percent ormore," Chidambaram said at a post-budget meeting with the Associated Chambers of Commerce(Assocham).
"We will not do anything that will hamper growth in either industry as a whole or in any sector," he said.
He said the budget sought to keep economic growth as the main objective, as it was necessary for equity, social justice and equitable distribution of prosperity.
"The government will not hesitate to take any measures that arerequired to keep the engine of growth running at full speed," saidthe finance minister.
According to him, the tax segment of the industry would also continue to grow and contribute to the economic growth.
Chidambaram promised a bill on direct and indirect taxes by April or May to clean up the non-revenue provisions after discussions in the parliamentary standing committee.
