BEIJING, Sept. 5(AP) -- European and Chinese trade talks stretched into Monday with no sign of an imminent agreement on a dispute over curbing China's textile shipments, state media said.
"The Chinese side takes a cooperative and practical attitude and will continue to work with the EU side to find solutions to the problems," Commerce Ministry spokesman Chong Quan was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency.
The talks between EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai were centered on unblocking 75 million pieces of Chinese-made clothing stranded at European ports for exceeding quota limits.
The negotiations are being held during a visit to China by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who arrived Monday morning on a trip to boost business and trade ties.
The textile talks, which began Sunday, stalled over a few major points, said Peter Power, Mandelson's spokesman.
"There have been constructive talks between the EU and China, and the two sides are broadly in the same place about how to deal with the overshoot in certain textile quotas," Power said Sunday. "This will lead to unblocking of the goods held at the borders, but there are some important aspects still to be reached, and discussions are continuing at expert levels."
An EU spokesman confirmed that talks had resumed Monday but offered no details.
China's textile shipments have surged since the end of global quotas on Jan. 1, prompting the EU and the United States to limit imports in order to protect their manufacturers.
Talks last week between U.S. and Chinese negotiators in Beijing on a textile trade agreement failed to produce a deal.
