Serbia to export 300,000 tons of wheat despite lower yield
2005-09-22 07:12:46 XinhuaEnglish

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro, Sept. 21(Xinhuanet)-- Serbia will be able to export some 300,000 tons of wheat although the wheat production this year is about 27 percent lower than the previous year, officials said on Wednesday.

Besides the wheat for export, Serbia would have sufficient wheat for domestic needs, said Milan Prostran, secretary general of association for agriculture at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

He said that wheat production in Serbia this year will be over two million tons, with an average yield of 3.56 tons per hectare, despite the extremely unfavorable climate conditions.

The expected corn production is about 6.5 million tons, which is at the same level as the previous year, said Prostran, adding that two million tons of corn would be left over for export.

A pillar of the national economy, Serbia's agriculture will have a production value of over 1.1 billion euros(1.34 billion USdollars) this year, and a foreign trade surplus of agricultural products amounting to 180 million euros(219.6 million dollars).

Serbia's Deputy Agriculture Minister Danilo Golubovic has said that this year's foreign trade surplus of agricultural products was a good indicator that agriculture is a profitable branch of the economy. Enditem
