"Tsinghua University" listed as famous trademark
2006-10-18 00:55:21 Xinhua English

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tsinghua University, one of China's most famous universities, is the first Chinese university to see its name appear on a list of famous Chinese trademarks.

106 famous trademarks appear in the list released by the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) on its website on Tuesday.

Trademark protection is very wide-ranging.

The SAIC ruling means that the name "Tsinghua University" or "Tsinghua" can only be used in fields related to education and training. No enterprise or commodity can use "Tsinghua" in their names without authorization, a local official in charge of trademark issues said.

Earlier this month, two publishing companies in Beijing were fined a total of 300,000 yuan (37,500 U.S. dollars) for using "Tsinghua" in the title of books they published in 2005.

The name of Minsheng Bank, as well as three of Beijing's old local brand names -- Rui Fu Xiang, Wang Zhihe and Rong Bao Zhai --have also been added to the list, according to the SAIC. Enditem
