Chinese shares down 1.4% despite Wall Street rally

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares fell for a third day Friday despite overnight Wall Street rally, as jittery investors dumped stocks to shun potential uncertainty over the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 62.63 points, or1.43 percent, to 4,320.77, the lowest closing in six months. It trimmed losses in afternoon trading after once tumbling as much as 4.28 percent.

The Shenzhen Component Index ended down 80.84 points, or 0.51 percent, to 15,776.87.
