NEW YORK -- Stocks opened slightly lower on Thursday as a government report showed the number of U.S. workers applying for unemployment benefits rose last week and after disappointing results from investment bank Merrill Lynch & Co Inc and drug maker Pfizer.
The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 31.19 points, or 0.25 percent, to 12,588.08. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index
was down 4.61 points, or 0.34 percent, at 1,360.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.15 points, or 0.13 percent, at 2,346.96.
