NEW YORK - Stocks are mixed in early trading as investors await a reading on consumer confidence and digest a busy week of corporate earnings reports.

Investors want to see if the preliminary April reading for the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index will offer insight into the mind-set of the consumer as the economy slows down. A bad reading could sour investors' moods after two days of rallies.

In the first minutes of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 35 points at the 12,884 level.
