Chinese shares close up 1.40 percent

Chinese share prices closed 1.40 percent higher on Tuesday led by financial and energy stocks due to strong first-quarter net profit results, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks yuan-denominated A shares and hard-currency B shares, gained 1.40 percent, or 48.68 points, to 3,523.41 at 3pm.

Gainers in the Shanghai market outnumbered losers 552 to 213, while 18 were unchanged.

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks the smaller domestic stock exchange, was up 1.03 percent, or 10.78 points, to 1,055.80.

The Shanghai A-share Index was up 51.16 points or 1.40 percent to 3,696.74 on turnover of 99.2 billion yuan. The Shenzhen A-share Index added 11.75 points or 1.07 percent to 1,108.11 on turnover of 42.7 billion yuan.
