11 meningitis cases reported in Guangdong
2005-02-02 00:23:43

BEIJING, Feb. 2 -- The number of meningitis cases in Guangdong this year rose slightly over the same period last year, the Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday.

Of the 11 cases diagnosed in January, most were migrant workers.

Two had died, two were being treated and the other five had recovered, the rep
ort said. One patient in Dongguan had been discharged from hospital and another in Maoming remained hospitalized.

The cases in Guangdong were mostly group A meningitis diplodocus, less lethal than the group C cases recently diagnosed in Anhui Province. Guangdong has prepared vaccines for both group A and C meningitis. The vaccines can be transported to any region within the province within 24 hours.

Medical experts have urged the public to take more exercise and ensure good ventilation indoors.

Henan, Hebei, Jiangsu and Sichuan provinces follow Anhui in the latest ranking of meningitis reports this year. Fujian, Hainan and Tibet remain unaffected regions.
