Trade unions donate to blast-hit coal mine company

FUXIN, Liaoning Province, Feb. 16(Xinhuanet)-- Chinese trade unions have donated to the coal mine company that was devastated by a gas explosion that claimed at least 210 lives.

The blast occurred at about 3:00 p.m. Monday 242 meters underground in Sunjiawan colliery, which belongs to the Fuxin Mining Industry Group, in Fuxin City of northeast China's LiaoningProvince.

According to Yao Dianfu, the company's vice president, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions donated one million yuan(about 122,000 US dollars) Wednesday afternoon to help the victims' families, and the Liaoning Provincial Federation of Trade Unions contributed 200,000 yuan(some 24,400 dollars) earlier.

Out of the 574 miners working underground when the tragedy tookplace, 330 escaped and 244 were trapped.

Twenty-nine miners were injured and five still missing, said a source with the headquarters in charge of rescue operation earlierWednesday.

The Sunjiawan colliery has two coal mines with 3,100 workers. the Haizhou coal mine, the one where the tragedy occurred, turned out approximately 1.5 million tons of coal annually.
