Driver arrested for road accidents that kill six in Guangxi

NANNING, April 23(Xinhuanet)-- The reckless driver who caused six deaths on April 11 has been formally arrested with the approval of public prosecutors in Beihai, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the local procuratorate said on Saturday.

Zeng Qijian, a 36-year-old anti-smuggling officer with Beihai Customs, hit three motorcycles, five bikes and two pedestrians when he drove his car by the Sichuan Hotel on Haijiao Road. The serial collisions left four people dead on the spot and two othersat hospital, and injured four.

Traffic police said Zeng could be blamed for speeding and the car he was driving was not registered at the local traffic administration.

Zeng was arrested by the Beihai procuratorate on Thursday. As the car was not covered by any commercial insurance, local police said he would have to pay at least 1 million yuan(120,000 US dollars) in compensation. Enditem
