President Hu to meet Putin in Moscow

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a celebration marking Russia's victory in the World War II in Moscow next month, said Chinese diplomats.

"The two state leaders will discuss major international and regional issues of both concern and how to further bilateral ties," Assistant Foreign Minister Li Hui told a news briefing here on Saturday.

As guest of Putin, Hu will attend the 60th anniversary celebration for the victory of Russia's Great Patriotic War on May 8 and 9, along with more than 50 state leaders, government chief and representatives of international organizations.

"The celebration is an important multi-lateral diplomatic event and also part of the world's celebration for the victory over the war against fascism," Li said.

On the sidelines of the celebration, Hu Jintao will also meet French President Jacques Chirac, President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea, President Saparmurad Atayevich Niyazov of Turkmenistan and Romanian President Traian Bbasescu.

"During the World War II, the Chinese and Russian people fought side by side and contributed greatly to the world's victoryover the war against fascism and made great sacrifices for the strive," Li said.

President Hu's Russia tour is aimed at promoting the Sino-Russian strategic cooperation partnership, enhancing political mutual-trust and elaborating China's independent foreign policy ofpeace and its determination to seek a peaceful development, Li said.

During the visit, Hu will also meet Russian veterans, who havehelped China in fighting against Japanese invaders in the World War II, or their relatives, according to Li.
