Shaanxi gas explosion death toll climbs to eight

CHENGDU, May 13(Xinhuanet)-- The death toll of the coal mine explosion on Thursday in Panzhihua, southwest China's Shaanxi Province, rose to eight, with five others still missing, the Sichuan Provincial Production Safety and Supervision Bureau announced here Friday.

When the explosion took place, 23 miners were working underground. Rescuers have found eight bodies and rescued 10 people alive after one-day search. The remaining five are still missing.

The 10 injured miners are being treated at the Panzhihua City Hospital with stable condition.

The coal mine, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, has all the state required licenses. Experts said the explosion was caused by"poor management." Enditem
