BEIJING, July 1(Xinhuanet)-- The second summit of leaders of the Great Mekong Subregion(GMS) member countries will continue its"practical" style and discuss cooperation in related fields, Chinese experts said here Friday.
The GMS embraces six countries-- China, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. The second summit of leaders of the six countries will be held in China next week.
Under a mechanism for cooperation among GMS countries, established by the Asian Development Bank in 1992, the six countries focus their cooperation on five strategic areas including infrastructure, trade and investment facilitation, participation of the private-owned enterprises, human resources and environmental protection.
With the theme of"a stronger GMS partnership for common prosperity", the participants will discuss topics including achievements and challenges, common guidelines governing future GMS cooperation, and the road ahead towards sustainable development.
Shen Guofang, assistant Chinese foreign minister, said the meeting will pass leaders' declarations, which reviews GMS ongoing programs and outlines cooperation in the future.
Cooperative documents on transportation, information superhighway construction, power trade operation and animal epidemics prevention are also expected to be signed during the summit, he said.
China has started the construction of the Chinese section of highways from Kunming to Bangkok, and the highways in Laos China sponsors. These highways are expected to be completed by 2006.
The outbreak of bird flu in this region in recent years attracted international attention. In this summit, the six countries will hopefully launch cooperation in preventing diseases among animals and poultry. Enditem
