SHANGHAI, July 3(Xinhuanet)-- The volume of water used in Shanghai has reached 9.87 million tons per day this summer, and the metropolis has developed a daily supply capacity of up to 10.58 million tons to ensure water supply, said a source with the municipal water administration on Sunday.
Sustained, high temperatures in Shanghai have driven high the city's daily water supply which has exceeded 9 million tons by now, approaching the record high of 9.24 million tons set in 2004,the administration said.
With an expanding urbanization and a growing population, Shanghai is facing a 6 percent growth rate in water supply, noted the source. And the city's water reserve is less than 10 percent, causing a sharp contradiction between water supply and demand.
To ensure water supply for civilian use,the municipal water administration is taking a series of substantial, effective measures by regulating the water supply at both peak and low ebb periods and diverting water from reservoirs to ease the strain of water supply. Enditem
