2 to 3 typhoons to slash China in August: meteorologists
2005-08-02 07:42:41 Xinhua English

BEIJING, Aug. 2(Xinhuanet)-- China would receive two to three typhoons in August, after typhoon Haitang had wrecked havoc at southeast China in mid-July, meteorologists said on Tuesday.

Five to six tropical cyclones or typhoons would be formed at the northwestern Pacific and South China Sea in August and two to five of them were expected to land at the coastal areas in southeast China, said Wang Yongguang, an engineer with China Meteorological Administration.

The No. 9 tropical cyclone Matsa was formed Sunday at the oceanto the east of Philippine and was moving towards China's southeastern coastal areas at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

The first typhoon landing at China came about one month later this year than the previous years. The first typhoon Haitang landed at the island province of Taiwan on July 18, in contrast with the normal typhoon season staring from mid-June and ending atmid-October.

Wang said the phenomenon could be attributed to the inactive activities of typhoons this year and the atmospheric circulation, which also helped check the typhoons and tropical cyclones from landing at China. Enditem
