2006-02-21 03:29:05 Xinhua English
BEIJING, Feb. 21(Xinhuanet)-- The year 2005 saw China's explosion cases go down 13.7 percent from the previous year, thanks to a three-year-long campaign to strengthen the management on arms and ammunition, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

The country's arms and ammunition manufacturing enterprises underwent a three-month rectification for civilian explosives in 2005, reported the Legal Daily on Monday.

During the straightening-out period, more than 10,000 hidden dangers were discovered in time and rooted out at more than 75,000 work units. And 1,839 criminals involving explosions were sentenced in line with the law and 483 people were put into custody, according to the ministry.

A total of 33.2 tons of dynamite, 282,000 detonators, 46,000 meters of blasting fuses and more than 3,000 deserted cannonballs were destroyed during the cleaning movement, said the newspaper.

Official statistics show that China organized 300 police classes in 2005 which have trained 1,500 police operating personnel and 17,000 workers involved in removing and regulating explosives.

Meanwhile, police departments nationwide are improving the civilian explosives information management and the detonators numbering system in an effort to apply technology to the police's overall security supervision enhancement.

The information management system on civilian explosives has already collected information about the production, sale, purchase, transportation, storage, distribution and use of more than two billion detonators, as well as information about work units and personnel involving explosives, said the ministry.
