BEIJING, April 4(Xinhua)-- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Tuesday told a visiting U.S. official that bilateral cooperation was essential to maintaining world peace, stability and development. Luo Gan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, was speaking in a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. Luo said Chinese President Hu Jintao's impending visit to the United States was top priority of bilateral relations this year. China and the United States had effectively cooperated in trade, fighting against terrorism, law enforcement, nuclear non-proliferation, controlling bird flu, the Korean and Iranian nuclear issues, and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan, Luo said. China-U.S. law enforcement cooperation was an important part of the bilateral relations, Luo said, noting that China valued and would continue to support pragmatic cooperation between the two law enforcement departments. "China hopes to make substantial achievements in extraditions, fighting terrorism, Olympic Games security, and illegal migration," Luo said. Chertoff said the United States attached great importance to cooperation with China and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would work with China's Ministry of Public Security to promote bilateral law enforcement.
