SHANGHAI, July 31 (AP) -- Shanghai has constructed a massive bunker complex beneath the city capable of sheltering 200,000 people from a nuclear attack, a local newspaper reported over the weekend.

The 90,000-square-meter (about 970,000-square-foot) complex connects to shopping centers, office blocks, apartment buildings and the subway system via a series of 15 tunnels totaling 4 kilometers (2 1/2 miles) in length, the Shanghai Morning Post said in an exclusive report.

It said the complex has water, electricity, lighting, ventilation and protective doors to support life for up to two weeks.

The report, originally published Saturday, didn't say when the complex was finished or whether it was built with any specific threats in mind.

Shanghai suffered from Japanese and American air raids during World War II and like most cities, dug vast underground complexes during the Cold War, when then leader Mao Zedong believed a nuclear war with communist rival the former Soviet Union was imminent.

In recent years, the city of 20 million has recovered its claim as China's financial center and is key business and manufacturing hub.
