Six killed, nine injured in central China traffic accident

CHANGSHA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and another nine were injured following a traffic accident in central China's Hunan Province, according to local sources.

The accident took place at about 10 a.m. in the Taoyuan County of the Changde County, where a villager Liu Nanhai driving a tri-motorcycle with 15 people on board plunged into a truck. One person on Liu's vehicle was killed on the spot, five died in hospital and the other nine are still hospitalized. It is not known yet whether Liu is on the dead list.

The truck driver was not hurt.

Liu has no driving license, while none of the vehicles has a plate.

Cause of the accident is under investigation.

Over 130 traffic accidents were reported each year with over ten fatalities, said Suo Lisheng, Standing Committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference's National Committee in Beijing on Sunday.

Traffic accident is one of the major killers for Chinese people. In 2005 the Ministry of Public Security has reported over 90,000 people killed by traffic accidents, accounting for about one-fifth of the total traffic accident fatalities in the world. Enditem
