BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Spring Festival is not only an occasion for families and friends to get together to ring in the Lunar New Year, it's also a huge boost for business as many Chinese were caught in a consumption craze. The following is a quick rundown of who spent what and where: RETAIL SALES HIT 220 BILLION YUAN China's retail sales surged 15 percent year-on-year to 220 billion yuan (28.2 billion U.S. dollars) during this year's festive holiday which began on Feb. 18, showing pent-up spending power of the country, figures from the Ministry of Commerce show. BEIJINGERS SPEND 15.69 BILLION YUAN IN SEVEN DAYS Beijingers spent 15.69 billion yuan during the seven-day holiday in shopping, dining and traveling, with average expenditures per person topping one thousand yuan, the Beijing Youth Daily reported on Sunday. Department stores in the capital saw sales jump 8.4 percent, spending in supermarkets was up 16.1 percent and catering industries saw a 19.7 percent increase in sales. VINTAGE RESTAURANTS: BIG WINNER IN FESTIVE MARKET This year's festival witnessed a sales surge of nearly 30 percent in Beijing's traditional food restaurants, including Qingfeng Bun Store, Huifeng Dumpling Shop and Liuquanju Bean Bun Store. NEARLY 30 MILLION PEOPLE ON THE MOVE China's airlines and railway companies will likely be busy for sometime accounting for all ticket sales as nearly 30 million people took the train or a flight. A total of 29, 302 fights carried 3.71 million people, up 21 percent over the same period of last year, while those took trains amounted to 3.75 million per day, up 2.1 percent year-on-year. TEMPLE OF HEAVEN TOPS LIST OF NUMBER OF TOURISTS Beijing parks received more than 1.24 million visitors from home and abroad, rising by 47.37 percent year on year, official figures revealed. The Temple of Heaven welcomed 247,900 visitors, the largest among all local parks. The Summer Palace was second with 203,900 visitors. The city's total tourism revenue during the holiday reached 1.96 billion yuan, up by 4.7 percent year on year. CELEBRATING FESTIVAL WITH BUDDA AND CONFUCIUS Burning incense and giving thanks to Budda for good blessings is a favorite during Spring Festival. Wutai Mountain in north China's Shanxi Province and Hengshan Mountain of central Hunan Province, both of which are famous Buddhist spots, attracted more than 90,000 and 140,000 tourists respectively. The hometown of Confucius in east China's Shandong Province received about 260,000 tourists, a hike of 63 percent over Spring Festival last year. DATE WITH SNOW Almost four million people spent a snowy festival in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province skiing, and playing in the snow. They splurged 2.51 billion yuan, up by 25 percent year on year. The number of people also witnessed a rise of 21.3 percent from the same period of last year.
