BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China witnessed a record high of 179 million domestic tourists during the May Day holiday, up 22.7 percent year on year, according to official figures.

Meanwhile, tourists spent 73.6 billion yuan during the weeklong holiday, up 25.8 percent.

Four tourists died and 18 were injured during the holiday, the office said without giving further details.
