Chinese defense minister arrives in Manila on official visit

MANILA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan arrived in Manila Sunday for a five-day official visit at the invitation of his Filipino counterpart Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

Cao said in a written statement upon arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport that the purpose of his visit is to enhance understanding and trust, expand common stands, develop friendship and promote friendly relations between China and the Philippines as well as between the armed forces of the two countries.

Cao is scheduled to meet with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and hold talks with Teodoro on Monday.
