China to host summit of Asia-Europe Meeting in 2008

GUILIN, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The seventh summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) will be held in Beijing on Oct. 24 and 25 next year, according to the ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting ended here on Tuesday.

The two-day ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting, which was held in Guilin in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, focused on preparatory work and progress of the biennial summit, as well as international and regional issues.

China has established a summit preparatory committee headed by Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

Founded in 1996, the ASEM has 45 members, including China, Japan, Republic of Korea, 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and 27 nations of European Union (EU).
