BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Local Beijing police have seized 25,000 packets of counterfeit cigarettes, some of which bore the logo of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The cigarettes were discovered on Tuesday in a rented house in the ancient Dashilan area south of Tian'anmen Square during a routine inspection of coal-fired stoves and fire safety measures to mark the first day of the heating being switched on, the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau Xuanwu Branch said. At 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, officers reached the No. 6 compound on Tongzi Alley and noticed "a sense of unease" among the compound's temporary dwellers. They stopped to question a couple from Jiangxi Province. "The officers found the 20-square-meter house contained stacks of boxes of different kinds and most of the counterfeit cigarettes were carefully hidden in boxes used for packing instant noodles or speciality foods," said Zhang Jianliang, the Dashilan station's deputy chief. Inspectors from the Xuanwu tobacco monopoly bureau confirmed all the cigarettes were fake. More than 20 famous brands were forged to create fake brands such as "Zhonghua Olympic Tobacco" and "Beijing Olympic Tobacco". Many of the packets were printed with the logo "Beijing 2008". "The counterfeit cigarettes were so well forged that ordinary customers would hardly be able to tell them apart from genuine ones," said Liu Yang, chief of the inspection team. The couple from Jiangxi Province admitted they had opened shops near Guang'anmen and the West Beijing Railway Station to sell the fake cigarettes, but refused to provide more details. They are still being held in police custody.
