BEIJING, Nov. 20 -- Shanghai may build a sluice at Wusong at the mouth of the Yangtze River to guard against rising sea levels, flood control officials said Monday. Construction is expected to finish in five to six years, and detailed designs are being discussed, said Zhang Zhenyu, an official with Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters. "Climate experts will give specific suggestions on the design," said Zhang. "At present the standard for the height of the flood-prevention wall is 5.86 meters, and the wall along the Bund is 6.9 meters, which is basically enough against rising sea levels." According to the latest climate report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the weekend, by 2100 global warming will cause the sea level to rise by 59 centimeters, and temperatures may rise by 1.1 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. Global warming may also worsen typhoon damage. (Source: Shanghai Daily)
