Five hurt in escalator mishap in Shanghai

FIVE passengers were hurt when an escalator going up suddenly reversed in Pudong New Area this morning, Xinmin Evening News reported.

Two men and two women injured their ankles, and a young woman suffered serious abdominal injuries when five or six passengers fell on her. She is still under medical observation, the report said.

The crowded escalator, in the Century Avenue Station of Metro Line 4, suddenly stopped for two or three seconds and then went into reverse at 8:30am. Passengers were pushed down by others standing in front of them, one of the injured surnamed Wang said.
