BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Chen Zhili called for greater breakthroughs in the country's high-speed railway system while attending a signing ceremony of a railway cooperation project agreement here on Tuesday.

The project agreement, jointly signed by the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Science and Technology, was targeted at making more breakthroughs in railways with speed of 350 km per hour and providing more technological and equipment support for the Beijing-Shanghai express rail line.

The project is also aimed at making China's railway system more competitive internationally and boosting associated industries.

The construction of more high-speed railways will help build an environment-friendly transport system and upgrade the current system, experts say.
