BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- China recorded 5.1 road accident deaths for every 10,000 motor vehicles in 2007, the highest in the world, a source at the second China Traffic Safety Forum said hereon Thursday.
The world average was two deaths per 10,000 vehicles, the source added.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, since 1996 China has ranked first worldwide in terms of traffic deaths. Road accidents claimed 81,649 lives nationwide last year, 7,806 fewer than the year before.
In 2007, the nation produced 8.88 million motor vehicles and sold 8.79 million, a growth of 22.02 percent and 21.84 percent, respectively, over the previous year.
According to the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO), road deaths numbered more than 1.2 million worldwide annually, with more than 50 million injuries.
