BEIJING, May 23 - At a press conference launched by the State Council at 10:00 a.m. today, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province Li Chengyun reported that the quake death toll in Sichuan alone reached 55,239 as of 19:00 May 22, with 281,066 injured and 24,949 missing.
In addition, it was estimated that 5.9325 million houses were severely damaged and 5.4619 million collapsed, leaving millions of people homeless, according to Xinhua News Agnecy.
