4 officials shamed for election bribery

FOUR community officials in Longgang District had been shamed for bribery in a local leadership election, the local disciplinary inspection department said Monday.

The four officials with the Shijing Community, Pingshan Subdistrict, bribed a local resident identified by his surname, Mai, with a refrigerator May 15 in exchange for his vote in the June election, according to the department.

The offenders were shamed in a circular distributed by the department and their candidature was withdrawn.

Nationally, about 2,100 officials were punished for misconduct during the latest round of local leadership elections in the year to January, 2008, according to the CPC Central Commission for Disciplinary Inspection.

Of these, 1,948 were reprimanded and 163 received administrative punishment such as suspension, demotion or removal from posts.

The offenders were involved in 1,885 cases of malpractice including election bribery or buying posts.
