SHANGHAI, July 1 (Xinhua) -- A man from Beijing stabbed five policemen to death here on Tuesday in an attack meant as revenge for an interrogation last year, police sources said.

The suspect, surnamed Yang, stabbed a security guard at a police branch in the Zhabei district of Shanghai at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday and started a fire at the gate of the facility.

He then charged into the building and assaulted nine officers with a knife. Five police officers died of their injuries, authorities said.

Yang, 28, was apprehended by police at the scene and detained.

A witness surnamed Yi said some of the officers had chest injuries, while others had blood-stained faces. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Yang was from Beijing. He told police that he had been interrogated last October by police in the branch who suspected he had stolen bicycles. He was unhappy about the interrogation and wanted revenge.
