Former Shanghai official jailed for bribery

SHANGHAI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chen Chaoxian, former head of Changning District Government in Shanghai, was sentenced to jail term of 13 years for bribery on Wednesday morning, according to a court ruling.

Chen was accused of taking a bribe of 3.1 million yuan (451,895 million U.S dollars) offered by six people, including a Hong Kong businessman, Yang Song-cai, when he served as deputy head of the Huangpu District Government, and head of the Changning District Government, according to a ruling of the Xuancheng City Intermediate People's Court, Anhui Province.

He did not appeal to the court.

Chen was investigated in November 2006 for alleged violation of Party discipline. He was stripped of his Party membership and dismissed from his post in May 2007.

He became head of the Changning District Government in July 2003.
