ASHGABAT, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Ashgabat Thursday for a state visit to Turkmenistan to push forward the friendly and cooperative ties between China and Turkmenistan.

The Chinese president is expected to meet his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and other Turkmen leaders on expansion of cooperation between the two countries.

Since the two nations forged diplomatic relations 16 years ago, bilateral ties have become increasingly stronger with frequent high-level visits, strong political trust and remarkable cooperation in trade, transport and culture between the two nations.

President Hu is on the last leg of his three-nation tour, which have already taken him to the Republic of Korea and Tajikistan. In the Tajik capital of Dushanbe, the Chinese leader attended the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Founded in 2001, the SCO groups China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
