Chinese president calls for world peace, prosperity in New Year Address

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called for world peace, stability and prosperity in a New Year address broadcast on Wednesday to domestic and overseas audiences via state TV and radio stations.

"We sincerely hope all countries will support and help each other and work together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the world and bring to the people of all nations a peaceful and happy life," Hu said.

The address, "Jointly Promote World Peace, Stability and Prosperity," was broadcast by China Radio International, China National Radio and China Central Television.

"At this moment, there are still people in the world who are suffering from war, poverty, illness and natural calamities," Hu said. "The Chinese people are deeply sympathetic to them and willing to continue to give all we can to help them.

"From Beijing, I wish you all happiness and health in the new year," the president said.

The year 2008 has been very eventful and extraordinary for the Chinese people, he said, and he thanked the people of the world for their support and help in the past year.
