BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The China Meteorological Administration, the country's meteorological authority, launched a level-III or orange emergency alarm on Saturday morning in the face of tropical storm Linfa.

Linfa, the third tropical storm this year, was expected to land in the coastal areas between the eastern part of Guangdong Province and southern Fujian Province or move north along the Taiwan Strait, from between noon and night on Sunday, said the administration.

The storm was upgraded to a strong tropical storm at noon. It was at 20.5 degrees north latitude and 117.4 degrees east longitude at 11 a.m. Saturday, 300 km south of Shantou City, Guangdong Province. The wind speed was up to 25 meters per second, and it was forecast to continue moving north at 10-15 km per hour over the next 24 hours.

Strong gales were expected to sweep some coastal cities in Guangdong and Fujian provinces, the administration said.

Local governments in Fujian and Guangdong have launched emergency response plans.
