HONG KONG, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of organizations that have joined a carbon audit campaign in Hong Kong almost tripled within one year to hit 107, an official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said Friday.

The HKSAR government launched the "Green Hong Kong - Carbon Audit" campaign in July last year with the release of a guideline. Thirty-seven organizations joined the campaign, said Edward Yau, secretary for environment of the HKSAR government.

The organizations that have joined the campaign include companies, universities, professional bodies, property managers, among others, he said.

Yau praised the companies for their leadership in setting the "green" example.

The HKSAR government is also committing some of the public buildings to the campaign, in addition to earmarking 450 million HK dollars (57.7 million U.S. dollars) for subsidizing carbon audit projects, he added.

Hong Kong, which currently emits about 45 million tons of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide, has been striving to make itself cleaner and greener.
