State Councilor visits CAS oldest academician, founder of China's biophysics

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Friday visited Bei Shizhang, founder of China's biophysics and exobiology sciences, one day ahead of Bei's 106th birthday.

Liu extended warm birthday wishes to Bei, who is also a renowned biologist and educator and spoke highly of his devotion and contribution to the country's science and technology development and in fostering scientific personnel.

Liu described the older generation of scientists including Bei Shizhang as "important source" and "precious fortune" of the country's scientific advancement. She also urged efforts to provide good conditions for their living and research work.

Bei Shizhang, considered as the "Father of Biophysics" in China, was born in Oct. 10, 1903, at Zhenhai county of east China's Zhejiang Province. He is the founder, the first chief director and current honorary director of CAS's Biophysics Institute.

He, now the oldest CAS academician, is also a pioneer of China's cytology and embryology sciences.
