Strong earthquake hits sea east to Taiwan, tremor felt in Taipei

TAIPEI, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted the sea off the east coast of Taiwan's Hualien County on 14:10 Sunday afternoon, local meteorological authorities said.

Obvious tremor was felt in Taipei.

The epicenter was located at 123.09 degrees east longitude and 23.35 degrees north latitude, with a depth of 15.5 kilometers, meteorological authorities said.

The strongest quakes detected on the island all measured three on the Richter scale, respectively in Hualien, Taitung and Yilan counties.

The quake in Taipei measured two on the Richter Scale.
